Synopsis:
In the first book of her erotic new series, Lora Leigh invites you to an intriguing world where genetically altered Breeds and the humans who created them commingle—and sometimes cross the boundaries of desire…Cursed with the extraordinary power to feel other peoples’ emotions, Megan Fields has tucked herself away in a remote corner of New Mexico, working as a small-town sheriff’s deputy. She finds solace in the silence and heat of the desert. But when Breeds begin dying on her watch, Megan realizes that the secrets from her past can’t stay buried forever. Someone is out for blood—her blood.

An arrogant Feline Breed, Braden Arness broods with feral intensity. His mission to solve the mysterious murders brings him to Megan, a woman who accosts his senses like no other. Only with him can she let down her guard—and surrender to the insatiable hunger that wracks her body. But as they team up to hunt the elusive killers, Braden and Megan find themselves becoming the prey…
This story was fast paced, a very quick read, & had good character development with good pacing, which allowed the mystery to unfold well.  Megan is one of my new favorite characters from the series.   I love how much she gave and how much she pushed despite her fears.

An empath who is not blocked or protected is very vulnerable and yet she pushed to become her dream job.  She tried to make her dreams reality and when she realized her dream came at a price she alone wouldn't pay, then she made the sacrifice to back off.  I loved how adventurous she as and who she wouldn't be coddled by her family, friends, her mate and certainly not by Jonas, no matter how much they tried

*Sidebar*  I can't wait to read the story of Jonas's mating, because that woman is going to have to be one hell of a badass.  I can't wait for him to be the one floundering and not sure, it's going to be awesome.

I loved Megan's partner and mate because he was just as wild, just as adventurous as she was. They were a great pairing.  I loved that he pushed her boundaries and made her face her fears while doing his best to protect her as well.

We didn't get much from Braden about his time in the labs but what we do know is terrible and he refused to let it break him and hold him back.  He's a great character to read, as he knows he wants his mate even before the power of the  mating is revealed.  I loved how he wanted to learn more about her fears, how he was willing to go wherever she needed to help her understand her gift and yet he didn't let her hide behind her fear or failures.  Braden was funny, and quick witted and his desire to banter with her made the story flow pretty quickly.

How sad these tales because they paint science so badly and yet mother nature still kicked up a fuss and played a bigger role than even the scientist could anticipate.  The sad part of all of this is knowing there are areas within our world where people are being experimented on especially where the growing needs of the black organ market.  It makers you wonder at the kind of people who would work in these labs.  Just so depraved.

I can't wait to see more from this couple as they grow and begin to influence more of the breeds around them.  I'm sure Megan's only going to get more powerful now that she and her mate are together.
