2018 Black Out Challenge

Started on booktube by Denise Cooper at ArtBooksLive on Youtube this challenge is a way to read only the African American authors on your shelves that may have been neglected in the past few years, she was also going to do Independent writers and featured 2 female writers per month.

When I saw her video I knew I was going to participate...but with a twist for me.  I'm Jamaican I can't leave my Caribbean authors off the challenge especially because I have so many of them on my shelves.

So for me the Modified Black Out Challenge is: Reading the Authors of Color on my shelves. I have severely neglected my Literally Fiction section because that's not really my genre, I used to read those when I was younger, now I normally read romance. I have been feeling the need to read more books beyond my genre and especially my non fiction books so this challenge came at a perfect time.

Here are a few of the authors on my shelves that I will be checking out:

  • Brenda Jackson
  • Walter Dean Myers
  • Zuri Day
  • Nicola Yoon
  • Queen Latifah
  • Assata Shakur
  • Afeni Shakur
  • Austin Clarke
  • Sister Souljah
  • Reginald McKnight
  • Barack Obama
  • Michelle Obama
  • John Lewis Rep Democrat
  • Toni Morrison
  • Jacqueline Woodson
  • Jamaica Kincaid
  • Angela Johnson
  • Eric Jerome Dickey
  • Kimberla Lawson Roby
  • Stacey Ann Chin
And so many more. as I find authors & poets that I think I should share I will.  Of Course reviews will be posted as I read the works.  I will track the challenges in the Month In Review post on the blog and share my stats as the year progresses.  As much as I would love to read only authors of color from my shelves I have given my word on a few ARCs that need to be turned in this year so it won't be all authors of color this year.

Let me know if there are any authors you think I should check out and I will add them. Are you participating?? Share In the Comments down below and I'll swing by to cheer you on.
Good Luck and Happy Reading
