I really enjoyed the story and seeing how varied the talents among the Carpathian truly is.  We are following the Dark Troubadours who have had some bad times recently, they are now post run in with the society of fanatics, who don't realize they're being used to track psychic women by the very thing they're believing they're hunting.

This isn't the first time one of the women have hinted at a previous relationship but this is the first time one had been married and pregnant before meeting the Carpathian lifemate.  This pregnancy puts her in danger, because her heart is giving out more rapidly than the pregnancy can advance.  To save her life they will have to convert her quickly but she can't be converted while pregnant and she's not far  enough in the pregnancy to be able to save the child's life.  It's a complication that they have never had before in the Carpathian community and it makes for a great story and a wonderful love story unfolding.  The whole community comes together with a big family reunion happening so that the healers can all be there for the newest addition to the family.

She has another complication in the form of her family. Personally I'm not a big believer in stupid characters being allowed to live her best friend??  The one that's too delicate for this harsh world?? Who is told by at least AT LEAST five people that she' being stalked and that her brother was murdered for what he was, has decided to put everyone's life at risk because it's to inconceivable  for her to believe;  "she's too gently she's too uncomfortable with things so we all have to protect her". You claim to love me and need me but you put my life at risk because you don't want your world view to change? BISH?!!!!!!! Yeah you are no longer my friend and no I'm not sorry about it either you NEED to go. You know I have a heart condition but let's worry me and put my baby at risk so you don't have to be an adult.  Yeah she can't be my friend anymore and I'm not going to miss her either. #ByeGirl you're too stupid to live.  This was my biggest pet peeve out of the whole story; she was a flibbing idiot and everyone kept indulging her, because oh poor her, she was hurt once in childhood, and even though the others were there and were just as hurt she gets to be the kid for the rest of her life #nawbish.

I really enjoyed the courtship that had to take place in this one.  I loved that we got a bit of a reunion in this one and got to see the families as they get to know one another.  I loved that they had music in common and were both hugely successful in their own rights, so they came in as equals even though she's way way way younger than him.  I loved that they were each other's fans before they met each other and admired each other's works.  It made it even more rich.

This one wasn't really about providing the hunt for any particular vampire, it really was about the relationship and I kind of enjoyed that. I also loved seeing characters you knew were going to get their own books and be instrumental down the road, get their little bits of screentime.

Being that I've read the series a bit backward I already know what the big issues for the women and how it's being solved so the main tension isn't there for me however if I hadn't read it out of order that would have been a huge mystery.  Overall this is one of the best ones out of the series, the next few books Certainly the most modern

Hiya, Ruby! yells the rain. It is falling on my face.

It is pouring down. Where’d that come from?

It is pouring down. I feel each drop—­I swear, EACH DROP—­land on me.

I am going to die.

I AM GOING TO DIE.

“Sorry,” I say to myself, to my life…to the nurse, who’s standing—­looking utterly horrified—­at the door.

But I don’t want to die! No. NO.

I’m coming back in—­right, Nurse? And you’re gonna cure me.

I don’t want to die. I do not want to die.

That nurse sees me coming, and she’d love to shut the door, but she can’t because she’d have to reach out into the rain—­but her face—­her face. The terror on it!

Too bad, lady—­comin’ in… She looks down; I look down. I see small kids coming up, clustering around her. I see the terror on their faces and—­

“Hey,” I say.

I stop where I am…right in front of them all, getting rained on.

This is a wonderful conclusion to this series, I loved it.  Once again we are back in the world of Ruby and it has expanded a bit, Ruby has set out on a journey and as the only survivor in her town she's not taking being alone really well.  After the events of book 1 (see review here), Ruby is back home and trying to come to terms with the changes in her life.  The world has changed, things that were once oh so important aren't now and she's gotta focus on her survival.  Ruby is struggling with a burden she has never had to deal with before; before the rains came she had none of the responsibility she has now and she's not sure how to handle it all.

I loved the realism of her breakdown from spoiled teenager to survivor.  It was both heart wrenching and gratifying to see her work on the things that mattered, while trying to stay sane.  We wonder all the time how long will the veneer of civility last and as we read Ruby's accounting we begin to understand that it might not last long at all.

This story goes beyond Ruby though and we begin to see what is happening to other survivors, see how others are coping.  And man does the action keep coming, the scary moments keep piling up and you know that something is going to break.

My sister and I talked about the fact that in the Hunger Games how clear the PTSD was (not so much the movies but definitely in the books) I was glad to see some acknowledgement that these events change the ones who live and eventually sheer brutality will allow only the strong to survive.  Even though Ruby is facing some scary times, she still tries to embrace being a teen, she tries to learn all she can that will help her survive and in the end she accidentally discovers something about herself and about a few others.  I really felt for Ruby in the beginning when we realized how far down the rabbit hole she had traveled, seeing from someone else's eyes how bad it's gotten is what wakes many people up and that's totally what makes Ruby realize something has to change.

We see how the world is doing and dealing and how the governments and the military is reacting to the cataclysmic events (not well as you can imagine).  As the story progresses and Ruby gets one of her greatest wishes and we are given a chance to see how those left behind are doing, we run back into the court of crazy kids from her journey into London last time and meet some new big bad.  I loved that the story didn't really let up, that there was so much going on, but we only got to see what Ruby could see.  And because Ruby isn't the smartest person in the room, we weren't' getting the full scope because as a teen, even now, Ruby tunes out on authority figures quite a bit.

As we watch the story unfold you can't help but shake your head at the share audacity of some and realize that sadly this is probably going to be the reaction of many.  I enjoyed seeing all the characters from before, watching Ruby try not to forget that she was higher on the social hierarchy in school so she shouldn't' even be talking to the Spratt, but he totally still has her phone and she wants it back!! I loved seeing the new characters, and their interactions with Ruby.

And this book still pulled no punches Ruby gains and losses so much in this novel. She has some serious moments where I wanted to shake and scream at her, and man in the end when it all starts to go down I just wanted to hold her and rock with her. I felt Ruby's reactions were so genuine and I felt her heartbreak when she began to accept and understand some of the things her mother used to say, things that as a kid she never took seriously.  Loss was her friend from the beginning as it was for so many and yet Ruby still fought on.  I wanted to punch all the villains while at the same time as an adult looking at the circumstances I totally understand their need for answers, but certainly not the greed.

I loved this book and was happy with the conclusion because seriously that ending was too funny and sweet.  It would be nice for a little novella telling us how humanity is doing, but I liked the way it was ended just fine.

I loved the quirkiness of the writing, the author's attempt at not using curse words but letting us know that in reality curse words would be flying right about now, was so much fun, I enjoyed trying to figure out which curse would go with the situation at hand.  Ruby's voice was so much fun, and so right and so awesome.  I really enjoyed seeing it all from her point of view, I might have made some better choices but as she says, she's just a 15 year old girl and she's doing the best she can.

I read this in one day. I picked it up not really knowing what it was about, just knowing I wanted something new to read and boy did I get it!! I loved this book, because the lead character was pretty bad ass for a fifteen year old girl and really she did exactly what I would have done as a kid.  Thrown into a world on the brink of extinction Ruby's trying to find a way back to normal, as each hour seems to bring with it a new and worse blow to her small world.

I loved that Ruby was willing to learn, adapt, listen and try her best to stay alive, at first she did what anyone would do, they didn't believe it was happening because really how the heck would this happen.  This takes place in a world where a cataclysmic event took place many years before and like most kids Ruby couldn't care less about what was happening whole continents away, not until it literally showed up in her backyard.

Once the story started going it just kept moving, new things were learnt, new and even more drastic changes were made as trial and error showed them what to do and what not to do especially because the consequences are so fatal if you screw up.

My heart raced throughout the whole book because I didn't know who was going to survive, the author wasn't afraid to go ahead and rip away any semblance of normalcy and show humanity at it's most basic, and you have to wonder if this is happening here in this small town outside of London, what's happening in more crowded cities?? In the deserts?? The Rain forests?? places where it was becoming monsoon season or even just on coastal areas??  It painted a bleak picture and yet considering what happened in New Orleans after Katrina this was pretty sadly realistic.

I found myself laughing with Ruby, screeching at her for being dumb (then remembering she's only 14 about to turn 15 years old so dumb is apart of her trajectory).  I cried when plans failed and when humans showed that they sucked even in the end of times, and teared up when they showed so much compassion.  This was a sad, brutal and great story.  Personally I knew if this was one written for adults, there would have been a few more scary situations because we all know what happens when there is no law to protect the innocent, and sometimes the scum of humanity somehow find a way to survive when good people die.

I loved Ruby's voice, I loved that she was so real, I say it all the time, If I'm in NYC when the Zombie apocalypse happens and I don't die, one of the first places I'm going is Tiffany's my sister laughs all the time because she says I can't do anything with all that bling, why yes I can. When currency no longer exists the only thing that's going to matter are the things you can trade, food cloths, water and fire, but even in the most desperate of times, people are going to want to feel good about themselves, and a little bit of bling will help with that.  So I totally believed when Ruby detoured for some girl time fun, with no one to stop her, why not be selfish?? Besides it's not like other people are going to need it anytime soon.

I loved how the story progressed, from Ruby's failures to her triumphs, to her attempts to keep some of her humanity alive.  Her sense of humor and her desperation.  This has been a treat to read and I was so happy I had the second one with me to dive right into and learn Ruby's fate.

Highly recommend for those looking for a fast pace read.

31 Days of Scare: My Favorite Paranormal Writers

Hi My loves,

I'm going to be sharing my love of the paranormal genre with you, from middle grade, to young adult, to new adult and to the all too awesome adult and romance sub genres, if it's paranormal I'm sharing.  I'm sharing show recommendations as well.  But for today we're talking about some my go to authors for the paranormal genre in adult:

The Queen for me has been and probably always will be L. A Banks' Vampire Huntress Series, and not because they are the most horrifying books (because they really aren't ) but because they have a badass female protagonist and she happens to have locs, be Black and is one hell of singer. Her crew and love interest are so good and while sometimes doing a little too much, you can't help but love them. This series does have strong faith discussions, not just Christian or the Abrahamic traditions, but influences of the Kemetic, Yoruba, Buddhist and so many more.  One of the best mutli cultural paranormal book series I've read in a long time.

Heather Graham, she's written books from contemporary paranormal to full on paranormal and she does it all under several names including Shannon Drake,   She's a versatile author who has had a long career creeping people out.  Some of my faves include her Krewe of Hunters series, her paranormal romance that features law enforcement working with psychics and mediums, heck sometimes even the cops are mediums.

Katie MacAlister, if you're looking for the rom com of paranormal, look no further than Katie's books, her Aisling Grey series, features a witty protagonist, who is an American expat in England and the foolishness she gets up to when she stumbles into the world of Dragons. I love this series and just how great Katie is at writing humor into her romances.

Next we have two openly pagan authors who still make it their mission to share amazing stories while sprinkling in a little bit of facts about Pagan paths.  I really enjoy that

The first is Maggie Shayne, who has written several different series featuring witches and many of the other paranormal creatures, her witches of course have to battle many different foes, and tend to be ultramodern women who just happen to be witches/psychics or mediums.  My fave by her is Gingerbread Man which is a thriller, and it's haunting and creepy and just plain scary.

Next is Laurell K Hamilton. Not only is she openly pagan, she's also in a non traditional relationship and she shares all of that on her facebook, and blog posts. Her paranormal series, both of them are amazing to read and feature more mature female characters that are super badass and really cool.  The Anita Blake Series  and the Merry Gentry Series

Another great author for me is Tracy Fobes, she writes historical paranormal books, especially ones which contain the Fae. I've loved each of the ones I've read and can't wait to read the one on my shelf that's unread.

A great author featuring the Fae is by Karen Marie Moning.  Her stories feature magic, the fae, Highlanders and time travel. I really love these.  Her books are always seamy and romantic and fun.

Gena Showalter landed on my radar several years ago when she created books about Atlantis, and now she has the Lords of the Underworld series, I've read a few but now I want to read the whole series.

Another that I love and admire, and y'all shouldn't be surprised since this was one of my new year's goal to catch up on the series.  Christine Feehan has written several different series. However, my favorite is the Dark Carpathian series.

Some of my old school favorites are:

• Shana'a Abe, she was doing dragons and the fae in the early 90s and she is still amazing at it.
• Susan Krinard her wolf series is really good, and she's wonderful at world building
• PC. Cast's Goddess Summoning series
• Charlaine Harris A Southern Vampire Series (Sookie Stackhouse series that True Blood was based on)
• Cheyenne McCray her Magic series is amazing!!
• Lilith SaintCrow The Devil series, which features a bounty hunter who is a necromancer who happens to work for the devil.

Well those are just some of my favorites, I'll be sharing more from each sub genre, like favorite authors for weres, or witches, or all the other supernatural categories, so stay tuned.

Sandal is back and that's all we have to say. I'm also watching and loving Blackish which is finally back, Empire, and for something dark and lovely I'm watching True Blood from the beginning, I'm on season 5 now.
